Spring Cleaning

When we think of spring cleaning, we usually think of that closet we’ve been meaning to get to and then something about the warm air and sunshine on a nice spring day motivates us to clean and organize and get rid of stuff. Cleaning your physical space is always a great idea and if you know me, you know I love a good closet clean out (or garage or the whole house). It feels like the end of one season and the beginning of a new season. BUT spring cleaning doesn’t have to only be a physical space in your home.

Have you ever thought about spring cleaning your mind? This could look like paying attention to your inputs - what are you watching, reading, listening to? Take your thoughts captive and address any negativity. Meditate, pray, write in a journal, take a 24 hour social media break, talk out your situation with your mentor, therapist or coach. Learn a new skill or research a topic you are interested in, sign up for a class. Learning is great for your brain! Inputs also include nutrition. Did you know that what you eat impacts your mental health? It’s true. The food you use to fuel your body also fuels your brain. And if your brain is healthy, it’s much easier to get your mind healthy also.

How about a spring cleaning for your relationships? If you have never sat down and analyzed your relationships and who you surround yourself with, I would encourage you to do this at some point. When you get clear on your goals and who you want to be, those around you can either help or hurt your progress immensely. Maybe you have friendships you have outgrown or people who have a negative influence on your life but it’s comfortable and you don’t want the awkwardness of trying to end it. A book about boundaries could be a great place to start. I will link a couple of options below! When you are trying to grow and become the best version of yourself, it’s so important to surround yourself with people who are trying to do the same. Relationships are always a popular topic with my clients because they don’t teach us relational skills in school and we need community. We need each other, our overall health is greatly impacted by the health of our relationships.

Need more spring cleaning ideas? Clear out the apps on your phone that you don’t need or use, clean up your email inbox, organize your computer desktop, unfollow/unfriend people on social media who bring your mood down. Now, I know this can sound overwhelming. You just went from spring cleaning a closet to spring cleaning your whole life :). As I always say… start small. As a coach, I help my clients organize their homes, life, health, etc. Spring is a great time to sit down and assess your life goals and your habits. A fresh start. I can give you that fresh start and hold your hand every step of the way. -CS
